Deep-Fried Stuffing on a Stick

November 29, 2008

Hey Y’all.  I’m back.  Things have been a tad bit hectic and unbalanced in my personal life to say the least.  I would like to say I am back with some crazy feat of veganization, but I can settle for just saying I’m back.

I had leftover uncooked stuffing from Thanksgiving that I wanted to use up, and I remembered being horrified by Paula’s Deep Fried Thanksgiving from last year.  She deep fried everything, even the goddamn cranberry sauce.

So I present to you: stuffing on a stick.  I would have deep fried it like Paula’s stuffing but I have yet to purchase a fry daddy.  Hey, at least it’s on a stick.

Its not poop!

No, it's not poop

Oh, and my Mom made the stuffing so I have no real recipe, but I am sure you guys have a favorite stuffing already, and no one actually makes any of my recipes. Since Paula’s recipe calls for 4 eggs, I did feel the need to whisk up some cornstarch and water and add it to the stuffing before I baked it.

Pan-Fried Stuffing on a Stick

  1. Take some cold but cooked stuffing, cut it into a rectangle, put it on a stick and shape it into a log/tube with your hands.
  2. Roll the stuffing tube in some flour.
  3. Fry it in a pan with some vegetable/canola/olive oil until golden brown and crispy on all sides.

I served this with a side of mushroom-shallot cream gravy dipping sauce.  Paula would probably just dip it in straight mayo though, or maybe some butter.

Are you sure Moxie didn’t make that?

Glad you clarified it’s not poop on a stick. Hope you had a great thanksgiving. Did you use chanterelles in your gravy? I made a mushroom gravy too (with chanterelles from the forage) and it was awesome.

Hey Kim, it was in fact chanterelle gravy! I have been pulling little packets out of my freezer lately and putting them in everything, so good.

    And Emily, ha!

Yeeks. How vividly I remember Paula’s lard-soaked “feast” from last Thanksgiving, and it being a toss-up whether the fried stuffing or fried cranberry sauce provoked the stronger gag reflex. She should give thanks that she’s still alive, y’all!

Paula Deen is like a big, gooey, deep-fried train wreck; I dearly enjoy counting how many sticks (STICKS!!) of butter are used in a single show. Even the uber-meat and potatos man in my life has been moved to stare at her food in horror and demand a changing of the television channel.

However, I am sure he would still eat anything fried on a stick.

My first visit to your blog, and my reaction was “Wait…are they doing what I think they are doing? That. Is. AWESOME!”

I am sure it will not be my last visit; please to meet ya!

Nice to meet you too M! I hope to keep this little blog updated more regularly, but there is only so much Paula stuff I can eat in a given period of time, I hope I don’t disappoint you.

I saw Paula Deen’s show tonight for the first time and as I gaped in horror at all of that grossness, I thought, I wonder if anyone has ever tried to make this stuff vegan. I was amazed to find not just an attempt but a whole blog of it! Awesome! I can’t wait to see what kind of goodies are coming up. The banana and ham casserole definitely wins!
